Dryer
fires usually can be avoided. Because dryers fires can be life threatening
I will expand on last month's aricle and be more specific on dryer vents,
maintenance and proper use. When possible, it is desirable to provide a separate exhaust air duct for each dryer installed. The duct should be six to twelve inches, depending on the air outlet diameter of the dryer. The duct should go as directly as possible to the outside air. Avoid right angle turns in the ducting; use 30 degree or 45 degree angles instead. The radius of the elbows should preferably be 1 1/2 time the diameter of the duct. Don't use screens or caps on the outside opening of the exhaust duct. The ducting should be smooth inside, with no projections from sheet metal screws or other obstructions which will collect lint. Provide inspection doors for routine clean-out of lint. A good rule for air make-up should be an opening from the outside air to the room in which the dryer or dryers are operating. The opening should be two or three times the cross section of the area of the total of the exhaust duct. Inadequate exhaust may cause high temperature limit switches or air flow switches to shut off the dryer. Do not disable the switches, they are provided for your safety. Instead, investigate the exhaust ducting and make-up air. Any obstruction, or air friction due to bends in the ducting will cause back-pressure and slow the passage of air throught the system, with resulting inefficiency and fire hazard. Lint should be removed from all dryers daily. Ducting should be inspected monthly and cleaned when needed. Invest in a shop vacuum and adhere to the maintenance and operation instructions which are provided with all new dryers. Employee training and periodic monitoring are a necessity. Don't dry items that are saturated with grease. Be sure you have washed kitchen towels, kitchen rags and aprons thoroughly before attempting to dry them. |
